Pilates Plus Physiotherapy for Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves abnormally to the side, often in an “S” or “C” shape. It may be structural or functional.

A structural scoliosis is a permanent spinal curvature caused by changes in the bones or structure of the spine. The curvature is fixed and does not change with movement or position. It can result from congenital issues (present at birth), neuromuscular conditions (like cerebral palsy), or idiopathic factors (unknown causes)which is most commonly seen in adolescents.

A functional scoliosis is caused by temporary factors affecting the spine’s alignment, often related to poor posture, leg length discrepancies or muscle imbalances. The curvature is flexible and can change with movement or when the underlying cause is addressed.

About Pilates Plus Physiotherapy for Scoliosis

How do I know if I have scoliosis?

A simple test called the Adam’s forward bend test is used to screen for scoliosis. If the curve in your spine remains when you bend forward then it may be structural. If the curve disappears then it is functional – the soft tissue is imbalanced but the joints are not yet affected. A definitive diagnosis and measurement of the severity of the curve is made via x-ray. It provides the Cobb Angle Measurement which classifies the severity of scoliosis as mild (<25 degrees), moderate (25 – 45 degrees), or severe (>45 degrees).

Yes. Unlike other countries such as Australia, you are required to obtain a Dr’s referral letter to attend Physiotherapy sessions in Hong Kong.

Pilates Plus enhances posture and spinal alignment by addressing misalignments and encouraging proper posture, thereby reducing strain on the spine. It fortifies core and back muscles to deliver improved support and stability, lessening pressure on vulnerable areas. Through gentle, controlled exercises, Pilates Plus also alleviates pain related to muscle strain and spinal misalignment, while regular practice promotes spinal health, prevents further curvature deterioration, and improves overall quality of life

Everyone is different but generally after 5 sessions you become more aware of your misalignment, strengths and weaknesses and are able to self-correct. As scoliosis is a permanent condition, treatment will be designed to provide home exercises which should be continued for life.

Pilates Plus looks at the whole picture, not just the spine. The treatment programme will include a combination of mat and Pilates equipment exercises aimed at core strengthening, stretching, mobilisation, balance and breathing techniques. A personalized home program will be developed and adjusted as your abilities improve.

Yes, it can. During your initial assessment, we will determine the specific factors contributing to your pain. This assessment allows us to tailor a program that focuses on your unique needs. The exercises will target the affected areas through a combination of stretching, strengthening, and mobilizing techniques designed to alleviate discomfort.

In addition to guided sessions, self-management plays a crucial role in your recovery. You will receive personalized self-help techniques that empower you to manage your pain effectively at home. These techniques may include specific stretches, breathing exercises, and posture awareness practices, all aimed at enhancing your overall comfort and mobility. By actively participating in your care, you can significantly improve your quality of life and better manage the symptoms associated with scoliosis.
